How to Read Past "Natural" and "Eco-Friendly" Labels
Natural, non-toxic, eco-friendly: almost none of these words are legally defined, so anyone can print them on a package without meeting a standard. Here is what actually carries weight, which certifications answer which question, and the four questions worth asking any brand.
Walk down almost any home goods aisle and you will see the same handful of words printed again and again: natural, eco-friendly, green, non-toxic, pure, clean. Almost none of them mean anything specific. In the United States, most are not legally defined for home textiles, which means a company can print them on a package without meeting any standard and without anyone checking.
That does not make every use of these words dishonest. Plenty of thoughtful companies describe their products this way because it is genuinely how they think about their work. The problem is that the words by themselves cannot help you tell the difference between a company doing the work and a company doing the marketing. For that, you need to look at what sits behind the words.
Words that sound meaningful but are not defined
Natural. This has no regulated meaning in home goods. Petroleum is natural in the sense that it comes out of the ground. Latex foam and polyurethane foam can both be described as containing natural ingredients, even though one is grown on a tree and the other is made in a chemical plant.
Non-toxic. There is no agency that certifies a mattress or a sheet set as non-toxic. The phrase reflects the manufacturer's own judgment about their own product.
Chemical-free. Strictly speaking, this is never true. Water is a chemical. Cotton fiber is made of chemicals. What people usually mean is free of a particular group of substances they are worried about, and the honest version of the claim names which ones.
Eco-friendly and green. These describe an intention rather than a measurement. They tell you what a company would like you to feel, not what the product contains or how it was made.
Made with organic materials. This one is slipperier, because it sounds like certification language. A product can contain a small percentage of organic fiber and still carry this phrasing. The question is always how much, and in which component.
What to look for instead
The useful signal is third-party certification, because it means someone other than the seller inspected the claim and has their reputation attached to it. A certification worth trusting has three things you can check:
- A named certifying body. Not just a logo, but an actual organization that performs inspections.
- A license or certificate number that traces back to a specific company and facility.
- A defined scope, so you know exactly what was certified and what was not.
If a seal has none of these, it may simply be a graphic the marketing department made. A surprising number of leaf-and-globe icons on packaging are exactly that.
Certifications that carry real weight, and what each one covers
It also helps to know that different certifications answer different questions. Mistaking one for another is a common way to end up disappointed.
GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) addresses organic fiber content along with processing chemistry, wastewater treatment, and labor conditions across the supply chain. It is one of the more comprehensive textile standards because it covers both environmental and social criteria.
GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) does a similar job for latex, covering organic content and the processing of the finished foam.
OEKO-TEX Standard 100 tests finished materials for a list of harmful substances. This is useful, but it is worth understanding clearly: it is a test for what is absent from the final product. It says nothing about whether the fiber was grown organically or how workers were treated.
GREENGUARD Gold measures chemical emissions into indoor air. Again, valuable, and again limited in scope. A product can be low-emitting without being organic, and vice versa.
CertiPUR-US is frequently misread. It applies to polyurethane foam and indicates that the foam was made without certain substances. It is not an organic certification, and a product carrying it contains polyurethane foam by definition.
None of these are bad. The mistake is treating any one of them as a general seal of goodness when each is answering a narrow and specific question.
Read the scope of the claim, not just the claim
This is the single most useful habit. When a product is described as organic, ask which part. A mattress might carry an organic cotton cover over a polyurethane foam core. The cover claim can be completely truthful while the bulk of what you sleep on is something else entirely.
The same applies to percentages. There is a real difference between a fabric that is 95 percent certified organic and one that is 20 percent, and both can be described in ways that sound similar at a glance.
Questions worth asking any brand
- Which specific components are certified, and which are not?
- Who issued the certification, and what is the license number?
- What percentage of the product is certified organic material?
- If a claim is made in-house rather than certified, what testing supports it?
A company that has done the work will answer these readily, because the answers are a large part of what they have invested in. Vagueness in response to a direct question is itself informative.
None of this requires becoming an expert. It mostly requires treating the friendly words on the front of the package as the beginning of the question rather than the answer to it.
