Do I need a foundation for my mattress?

Your mattress needs to rest on a firm and well-ventilated flat surface. Most platform beds provide adequate support and airflow without the need for a foundation (so long as slats are not more than 3" apart). Otherwise a proper foundation (or box spring) is required.
