Organic and Naturally Safer® Since 1997

Lifekind® was established in 1997, in Grass Valley, CA, to offer consumers Naturally Safer® alternatives to conventional household cleaners and personal care products. Today, after more than 25 years in business, Lifekind offers a wide selection of certified organic and natural products made in the USA† – through its catalog and online store – including many of its original products, and also organic mattresses and bedding and other textiles.

  • Family Owned and Operated

Now in its second generation of family ownership, Lifekind is dedicated to upholding a balance of innovation and tradition, while pursuing growth.

Through the introduction of new products, the company has entered new markets and expanded its offerings to promote healthy living across a broad range of categories.

  • Our Many "Firsts"

In 2008, Lifekind became the first mattress manufacturer in America to offer a Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified organic mattress.

Later, in 2013 we were the first to offer mattresses certified to the Global Organic Latex (GOLS) standard.

In 2015, our organic mattress was the first to achieve GREENGUARD Gold certification – UL’s highest standard for low emissions, VOCs and indoor pollutants.

  • The Original Eco-Factory™

Lifekind still manufacturers many of its certified organic mattresses, bedding and other textiles at its California-based Eco-Factory™, which opened its doors in 2003.

The first certified organic mattress in America was made here, after a Lifekind mattress became the first to pass Federal flammability standards without the use of chemical flame retardants.

A Skilled and Knowledgable Team with a lot of Heart 🫶

The current Lifekind team (and our alumni) are at the heart of who we are. And with an average employment of more than 10 years each – with some now over 20 – we're proud of our culture and true, hard-earned expertise.

Education as a Founding Principal

Our co-founder Walt Bader is a life-long educator. As a prior college professor and author he constantly shared his research and views, to further the organic cause, and help others find ways to substitute organic and natural for conventional. Co-founder Carol is an avid reader who built the first Lifekind employee reading library to share with the team early on, and who also was instrumental in creating the original Hazardous Household Chemical Glossary included in early versions of the Lifekind catalog from 1998 through 2008.

Our Story

Lifekind was founded in 1997 by Walt and Carol Bader. Their product line initially offered consumers Naturally Safer® alternatives to mainstream personal care, cleaning, and other household products.

Carol and Walt were passionate about their mission both having been chemically sensitive from an early age and plagued by allergic reactions to many household names. They were familiar with the difficulties of finding products that were functional and safe – both for humans and the environment.

Lifekind originally started as a catalog brand that offered organic and Naturally Safer household products by mail and online at lifekind.com. From the beginning, the catalog and website included facts on the importance of using each of their natural products along with a Hazardous Chemical Glossary listing many of the most common toxic ingredients lurking in widely used products.

Starting out in a small warehouse in Grass Valley, CA, Walt and Carol handled all aspects of the business themselves – from purchasing to shipping. As demand for their products grew, they expanded the operation and added organic mattresses, bedding, and other textiles to the product line. They hired product specialists trained to sell these products over the phone. In 2003, their Eco-Factory™ manufactured the first certified organic mattress and many other first-of-their-kind certified organic textiles.

Today – after more than 25 years in business – Lifekind offers a wide range of quality organic products made in the USA through its catalog, by phone, and online. With a long-time team of knowledgeable and committed product specialists, Lifekind has become a trusted source for its customers.
